Israel’s ‘apartheid at its worst’: Over 10,000 Palestinians still ‘unlawfully’ in jail

Palestinian officials say that despite the ongoing prisoner exchange deal with Israel, more than 10,000 Palestinians remain unlawfully detained in Israeli prisons.

Officials reported on Sunday that 1,968 Palestinian abductees have been released under the US-brokered agreement finalized on Monday.

However, they stressed that thousands of others continue to languish behind bars under “arbitrary and unlawful” conditions.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Affairs Commission, at least 77 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention centers over the past two years, while 360 children are still behind bars.

Most of the detained are from Gaza — many of them medical workers, students, and civilians abducted during Israel’s two-year genocidal war on the besieged Palestinian territory.

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese warned on Tuesday that the ongoing repression, even amid a declared ceasefire, exposes the reality of Israel’s apartheid system.

“They call it peace, but for the Palestinians, it risks to be Apartheid at its worst,” Albanese wrote in a post on X.

“All eyes must remain on Palestine," she said. "People of the world, do not look away now. As the legacy of Nelson Mandela reminds us, no one is free until everyone is free."

Human rights monitors have repeatedly condemned Israel for using mass detention and prisoner torture as weapons of war.

Palestinian detainees released under the ceasefire agreement have provided harrowing accounts of systematic abuse in Israel’s jails, describing them as “slaughterhouses” where the prisoners endure torture, starvation, and psychological warfare.

According to Palestinian health officials, the Palestinian detainees freed during the prisoner swap are arriving with severe physical and psychological conditions, including mutilation and disabilities resulting from systematic torture and medical neglect in the regime’s detention centers.
